Babylon
Aswad's Brinsley Forde stars in this drama about the black british experience circa 1980.
From the writer of Quadrpohenia.
A film ahead of its time in 1980, when its rawness and energy seemed disturbing and, to be honest, exaggerated. It might seem just as urgent 20 years on. Former 'Double Decker' Forde plays sound system DJ Blue, a seemingly ordinary young working-class black Londoner. There's no special pleading here, but a series of almost casual incidents which multiply so that by the time of the rather over-dramatic climax Blue has lost both his job and his sound equipment, which has been destroyed by racists. The police too have taken their pound of flesh. His reaction is violence against one man in particular and an implicit rejection of society.
